Lord Shiva's Sawan Shivratri 2026 Observances and Fast Rituals

Sawan Shivratri 2026 is scheduled for the night of 11 August, beginning at 04:55 IST and ending on 12 August at 01:51 IST. Devotees perform the traditional water abhiṣeka (ritual bathing of the Shiva lingam) at designated times throughout the night, with specific auspicious windows for each of the four night phases.

During the month of Sawan (Shravan), many Hindus observe a Monday fast called Sawan Somwar. The first Monday, 3 August, is considered especially significant. Unmarried women fast to seek a suitable husband, while married women fast for their spouse’s wellbeing. Religious scholars stress that intention matters more than strict adherence; missing a Monday due to illness or other genuine reasons does not invalidate the overall observance. Women experiencing menstruation are advised not to touch the lingam or perform abhiṣeka, but they may still participate in prayers and listen to chants.

Guidelines for the fast include drinking a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (panchamṛta) for the lingam, offering bilva leaves, flowers, and incense, and reciting mantras such as “Om Namah Shivaya.” Health is prioritized, and the fast is presented as a spiritual tool rather than a rigid checklist.
