Overview

The Hindu month of Sawan (30 July – 28 August 2026) continues to centre on intensive Shiva worship. Devotees perform pre‑sunrise ablutions of Shiva lingams, recite the Shiva Chalisa, and offer jal‑abhishek followed by Panchamrit with fresh bel leaves. Four fasting Mondays (3, 10, 17, 24 August) and strict brahmacharya prohibit garlic, onion, fish, egg, meat and alcohol; additional bans cover copper items, haircuts, green leafy vegetables, eggplant, milk, and oil massage on Sundays, as well as hair or nail cutting and noon‑time sleep. Offerings must avoid turmeric, kumkum, basil, ketaki flower, broken bel leaves and be presented only in brass, silver or steel vessels. Guidelines stress using pure water (often Ganga jal), milk, honey, Panchamrit, fresh three‑leaf bilva leaves, dhatura, akash flowers, sandalwood, ash and incense, while avoiding haldi, sindoor, tulsi leaves and shankh water. Large crowds gathered at Nageshwar Nath (Ayodhya) and Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi) on the first day.

The month’s principal festival, Sawan Shivratri, falls on the night of 11 August (04:55 IST to 01:51 IST on 12 August). Devotees perform water abhiṣeka of the lingam during four auspicious night phases. Monday fasts (Sawan Somwar) are observed, with unmarried women fasting for a suitable husband and married women for their spouse’s wellbeing; scholars note intention outweighs strict compliance, and illness or menstruation does not invalidate the fast, though women in menstruation avoid touching the lingam.

In Ujjain, worship of the fierce form Kaal Bhairav includes the tantric panchamakara offering of liquor, symbolising surrender of ego. The practice is described as the liquor disappearing after priestly presentation. Daily recitation of mantras such as “Om Namah Shivaya,” zodiac‑based chants, and consumption of rock‑salt continue throughout the month. Planting a Bel Patra tree in the north‑west corner of the home is encouraged for wealth and protection.
