L'Oreal Accelerates Product Development Using AI
L'Oreal, the French cosmetics giant, has deployed artificial intelligence to identify molecules in its skincare range that can be repurposed for new products such as shampoos. Senior executives say the AI system enables the company to bring new items to market up to four times faster than before. Fabrice Megarbane, head of L'Oreal’s consumer products division, explained that the technology predicts how ingredients affect skin and hair, allowing the recent launch of a collagen‑based shampoo that adds lift and fullness.
Other major consumer‑goods firms are also integrating AI into their innovation pipelines. Nestlé, Haleon and Mondelez International use similar tools to speed ingredient testing, generate recipe ideas and address supply‑chain vulnerabilities. Mondelez’s chief information and digital officer, Filippo Catalano, noted that AI‑generated recipes have improved nutrition, sustainability and cost in about 60 % of cases, citing new versions of Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookies produced through the technology.
