Loreley rockfall closes B42 highway in Germany

Several rocks, ranging in size from shoeboxes to beer crates, fell from the Loreley rock formation onto the B42 federal highway on August 31. The incident occurred between St. Goarshausen and Kaub in the Middle Rhine Valley. No vehicles were struck and no injuries were reported.

The B42 remains fully closed to traffic as authorities implement a wide detour. The Landesbetrieb Mobilität Rheinland-Pfalz (LBM) and the State Office for Geology and Mining are conducting investigations. Experts have used drones to survey the area and are planning to rappel down the cliff face to inspect the rock for further loose sections.

To mitigate future risks, officials plan to secure the affected area with a protective net. While the region is regularly monitored, officials noted that the steep terrain makes complete enclosure impossible.
