Loreley rockfall and B42 highway closure

On August 31, a rockfall occurred at the Loreley rock formation in Germany’s Middle Rhine Valley, depositing rocks of various sizes onto the B42 federal highway between St. Goarshausen and Kaub. While no injuries or vehicle strikes were reported, the highway was fully closed to traffic.

Authorities, including the Landesbetrieb Mobilität Rheinland-Pfalz and the State Office for Geology and Mining, initiated investigations using drones and planned rappelling inspections to identify further loose sections. To mitigate future risks, officials intend to secure the area with a protective net, noting that the steep terrain prevents a complete enclosure.
