Lorenz-Böhler-Spital to open new inpatient wing in 2027

The Lorenz-Böhler-Spital trauma center in Vienna's Brigittenau district is undergoing a significant reconstruction following a partial closure in 2024 due to fire safety deficiencies. A new modular building is being constructed on the site of a former parking garage to restore inpatient services to the facility.

Medical Director Thomas Beer stated that the project is on schedule, with the general contractor expected to hand over the building to the AUVA in December. The new wing is planned to open in February or March 2027. Once operational, the modern facility will feature three operating rooms, 56 standard beds, and four intensive care beds.

While the new capacity represents approximately half of the previous hospital's bed count, this reduction is part of a long-term strategic realignment. Under this plan, the Meidling trauma center will focus on treating the most severely injured patients, while the Brigittenau location will primarily handle scheduled treatments and elective procedures, though it will maintain acute medical capabilities.
