Lorenz-Böhler-Spital reconstruction
Overview
The Lorenz-Böhler-Spital trauma center in Vienna is undergoing reconstruction following a partial closure in 2024 caused by fire safety deficiencies. A new modular building is being constructed on the site of a former parking garage to restore inpatient services.
Medical Director Thomas Beer stated the project is on schedule, with the general contractor expected to hand over the building to the AUVA in December. The new wing is planned to open in early 2027 and will feature three operating rooms, 56 standard beds, and four intensive care beds.
This reduction in capacity, representing approximately half of the previous bed count, is part of a strategic realignment. Under this plan, the Meidling trauma center will focus on the most severely injured patients, while the Brigittenau location will primarily handle elective procedures and scheduled treatments while maintaining acute medical capabilities.
