Italian Senate electoral law preference vote amendment deadline centre‑right negotiation

The Senate has extended the deadline for submitting amendments to the government’s electoral law to 1 September, giving parties more time to negotiate changes. A final vote on the reform is set for 15 September, after a series of hearings and a planned Senate session on 9 September.

Centre‑right leaders are negotiating the inclusion of a preference provision. Antonio Tajani said any amendment on preferences must first be discussed and agreed within the centre‑right before being presented. Ignazio La Russa, the Senate President, is mediating the debate and has indicated the need for a stable governing majority.

A confidence vote on a justice decree caused pending amendments, including the “intercettazioni a strascico” amendment, to lapse automatically. Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Chamber, reiterated that the President of the Republic must represent all Italians and remain politically neutral, while stressing the importance of a stable governing majority for the country.
