Los Angeles 2028 Olympics face funding and transparency challenges

Preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games are facing scrutiny regarding funding, transparency, and logistics. Economists, including Andrew Zimbalist, warn that the LA28 Organizing Committee requires at least $2 billion for transportation costs alone to prevent significant traffic disruption. While the Games are projected to generate $19.2 billion in total economic output and support 88,000 jobs in Los Angeles County, significant costs remain. The Los Angeles Police Department estimates that policing the event will cost $732 million, with total personnel costs exceeding $1.15 billion.

Financial transparency has also become a point of contention. Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia has demanded more detailed accounting from LA28, noting that recent reports lack specific information on venue progress and contract details. Although LA28 estimates revenues of $2.6 billion from sponsorships and $2.5 billion from ticket sales, the committee’s budget is currently estimated at $7.26 billion.

On the ceremonial front, LA28 announced that the Olympic Torch Relay will make history by traveling through all 50 U.S. states, beginning in Atlanta. The Paralympic Torch Relay is expected to originate in Stoke Mandeville, United Kingdom. Additionally, competition routes for the triathlon have been announced, featuring Venice Beach and its canals.
