Los Angeles City Council approves $13M for LAPD Olympic vehicle package

The Los Angeles City Council has approved $13.04 million to fund a package of 107 non-patrol vehicles for the Los Angeles Police Department in preparation for the 2028 Olympics. In an 8-3 vote, the council authorized the use of Municipal Improvement Corporation of Los Angeles financing for the procurement.

The vehicle package includes 30 dual-purpose vehicles, 30 unmarked investigative vehicles, various command and staging substations, logistics trucks, transport vans, hazardous materials response trucks, and utility task vehicles. These assets are intended to support the 87-day operation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which is a federally designated National Special Security Event.

Additionally, the council has requested a fiscal impact report regarding a separate $30 million request for 300 standard patrol vehicles. According to a report by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, the department may require up to 6,700 officers on peak days, with the department only able to self-supply approximately one-third of that total.
