Los Angeles Clippers acquire Max Strus in multi-team trade

The Los Angeles Clippers have acquired guard Max Strus from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a complex five-team trade. In exchange for Strus, the Clippers sent a 2027 second-round pick to Cleveland, while Peyton Watson is headed to the Cavaliers in exchange for a 2031 unprotected first-round pick.

Strus, a 30-year-old veteran known for three-point shooting and defensive versatility, joins a crowded Clippers backcourt that includes Darius Garland, Bradley Beal, and Kris Dunn. The acquisition reunites Strus with former teammate Garland. Analysts note that the Clippers utilized a trade exception to absorb Strus’s $16.6 million salary, a move that prioritized veteran shooting over pursuing Watson, whose contract valuation exceeded the Clippers' available trade exception.

The trade leaves the Clippers with 17 players under contract, highlighting a roster imbalance. While the guard rotation is deep, the team faces significant depth issues in the frontcourt, relying heavily on aging center Brook Lopez and recovering Yanic Konan Niederhauser.
