Cleveland Cavaliers roster and salary restructuring

The Cleveland Cavaliers have undergone roster restructuring aimed at improving financial flexibility and depth following the re-signing of Donovan Mitchell to a four-year, $273 million contract.

In a complex five-team trade, the Los Angeles Clippers acquired guard Max Strus from the Cavaliers. To facilitate the move, the Clippers utilized a trade exception to absorb Strus’s $16.6 million salary, sending a 2027 second-round pick to Cleveland. While the Clippers’ decision to pursue Strus was reportedly influenced by an inability to match Peyton Watson’s contract valuation using existing trade exceptions, the deal ultimately resulted in Watson joining the Cavaliers in exchange for a 2031 unprotected first-round pick.

Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank stated that Strus’s versatility and shooting will be significant assets as the franchise undergoes a roster retooling following the trades of star players including Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Ivica Zubac. The acquisition also reunites Strus with former teammate Darius Garland in a backcourt that now includes Bradley Beal and Kris Dunn.

While the trade bolsters the Clippers' guard rotation, the team faces roster imbalances with 17 players under contract and significant depth issues in the frontcourt, where they must rely on aging center Brook Lopez and recovering Yanic Konan Niederhauser.
