Los Angeles County beaches see rescues, issue water warnings in heat wave

A prolonged heat wave across Southern California pushed thousands of people onto Los Angeles County’s shoreline. Lifeguards reported a record 1,950 ocean rescues as high temperatures (86‑95 °F) and humid conditions combined with six‑foot swells generated by distant hurricanes created strong rip currents. Lifeguard captain Pono Barnes said, “A busy summer weekend is usually in the 300 rescue range, 500 on the high end,” highlighting the unprecedented demand on emergency services.

At the same time, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued water‑quality warnings for the Venice Pier, Santa Monica Pier, Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro after tests showed bacterial levels above state standards. The advisories cover 100 yards on either side of the piers and the entire swim areas at Mother’s Beach and Inner Cabrillo, urging residents to stay out of the water until conditions improve. Governor Gavin Newsom has also positioned firefighters across several central and southern California counties to address the broader impacts of the extreme heat.
