Los Angeles experiences series of earthquakes near Inglewood

A series of earthquakes has rattled residents in the Los Angeles area, specifically near Inglewood, Lennox, and Westmont. A magnitude-4.0 earthquake struck near Inglewood at 4:44 am on Monday, following a magnitude-3.3 foreshock and a magnitude-2.5 tremor. The main quake occurred at a depth of approximately 11.8 miles, which experts note is deeper than the typical three-mile depth for California earthquakes, potentially resulting in less intense surface shaking.

By 8:00 am, nearly 40 aftershocks were recorded in the Inglewood and Lennox vicinity. While the seismic activity caused concern among residents, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

Separate seismic activity was also noted in the region, including a swarm of approximately 90 micro-quakes ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 2.7 centered around the Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone. While the USGS indicates that micro-quakes are not necessarily predictors of larger events, the fault zone remains a point of interest for geologists due to its historical capacity for significant seismic activity.
