Los Angeles Mayor orders utility shutoff freeze for residents

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has directed the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to suspend utility shutoffs for residential customers through the end of the year. The decision follows a period of extreme heat that drove up air conditioning usage and caused significant spikes in electricity and water bills.

To provide relief, Bass has encouraged customers to pay what they can afford and suggested enrolling in the LADWP Level Pay program to average costs over 12 months. Additionally, the utility will begin providing residential customers with detailed consumption information next month to assist with conservation efforts. Low-income households and seniors are encouraged to utilize the Lifeline and EZ-Save programs.

The measure comes amid rising public frustration over utility costs. City Councilmember Nithya Raman, a mayoral candidate, has called for an audit of LADWP and greater transparency regarding rate increases, noting that bills have risen significantly during the current administration.
