Los Angeles official investigates surging utility bills
Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia has launched an official investigation following numerous citizen complaints regarding excessive utility bills. The surge in costs is attributed to extreme temperatures exceeding 37.8°C, forcing residents and businesses to use air conditioning intensively. This increased consumption has pushed many users into the most expensive seasonal tariff tiers set by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
One notable case involves Canter's Deli, which received a combined bill for electricity, water, sewage, and waste collection totaling $35,700. Data indicates that the price for the first tier of electricity rose from 22 to 27 cents per kilowatt-hour between 2025 and 2026, an increase that exceeds regional inflation estimates.
To mitigate the impact, the LADWP offers the ‘Level Pay’ program, which averages consumption over twelve months to create steady monthly installments. Additionally, the utility provider offers interest-free payment agreements for up to 48 months for qualifying customers.
