Los Cabos authorities protect 10,000 sea turtle eggs

Authorities and environmental agencies have launched an operation in Los Cabos, Mexico, to protect approximately 10,000 olive ridley sea turtle eggs. Following the arrival of about 140 turtles at Playa El Médano in Cabo San Lucas, personnel from the Navy, Profepa, Conanp, and local government, alongside hotel workers, identified and secured nests to ensure successful incubation.

The eggs have been moved to turtle camps to mitigate risks from natural factors and human activities. Biologist Gabriel Olvera Guevara, head of the Los Cabos Sea Turtle Protection Program, noted that nesting sites face various threats, including storms, predators, and human interference. Specific risks include vehicle traffic in areas like Migriño and Tule, as well as mass tourism activities such as umbrellas and bonfires in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

To support conservation efforts, officials advise visitors to maintain a distance of at least 20 meters from nesting turtles, avoid making noise, and refrain from using camera flashes at night.
