Los Laureles dam reaches 95% capacity as water transfer begins
The Los Laureles dam has reached 95.52% of its storage capacity following recent rains, while the La Concepción dam remains at a high-risk level of 40.24% capacity. To address the disparity and prepare for projected drought in the coming months, the Municipal Unit of Drinking Water and Sanitation (UMAPS) is initiating a water transfer process.
Starting Monday, authorities will begin pumping water from Los Laureles to La Concepción through a system of underground pipes. This transfer is intended to bolster reserves at La Concepción for the next six months.
Prior to the transfer, officials conducted controlled discharges at Los Laureles to clear the reservoir of mud, debris, and organic matter brought in by early rains, which improves water quality for future treatment. Despite the increased levels at Los Laureles, water rationing continues in various neighborhoods. Currently, the capital receives water service every 12 days, though officials may reduce this interval to nine days depending on final rainfall levels.
