Lotta Harala retires from professional hurdling

Finnish hurdler Lotta Harala has competed in her final Grand Prix event in Espoo, marking the end of her professional athletic career. Competing in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Harala finished fifth with a time of 13.09 seconds. She described the retirement as a bittersweet experience, noting that while she loves competing and training, recent injuries—including a hamstring injury sustained in Lahti—prevented her from finishing her career in peak physical condition.

Parallel to her retirement, a legal matter regarding her personal data has concluded. The Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman issued a reprimand to the Finnish Sports Ethics Centre (Suek) for its handling of Harala’s information. The Ombudsman determined that Suek did not have the right to publish Harala’s personal details on its website’s suspension list or issue media statements regarding her three-month ban, which was issued in 2021. Harala declined to comment on the privacy ruling, stating that she will address the matter in her upcoming autobiography, scheduled for release on February 10.
