Finnish hurdling retirement and injury

In late July 2026, veteran Finnish 100-metre hurdler Lotta Harala announced she would retire in August, citing a history of injuries including spinal surgery in 2019 and a tibia fracture in 2021. Harala, who set a national record of 12.65 seconds in 2024, planned to conclude her career during the Sweden-vs-Finland meet in Helsinki. She later competed in her final Grand Prix event in Espoo, finishing fifth with a time of 13.09 seconds. Harala noted that a recent hamstring injury in Lahti prevented her from retiring in peak condition and indicated she would discuss her career and a past legal matter in her upcoming autobiography, scheduled for release on February 10.

Regarding that legal matter, the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman issued a reprimand to the Finnish Sports Ethics Centre (Suek) for its handling of Harala’s personal information. The Ombudsman determined Suek lacked the right to publish Harala’s details on a suspension list or issue media statements regarding a three-month ban issued in 2021.

Simultaneously, fellow Finnish hurdler Kristiina Halonen suffered a severe knee injury during training at the Lappeenranta sports hall. The accident resulted in a torn ACL, a torn posterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured meniscus, and two patellar dislocations in her right knee. Following scheduled surgery, Halonen faces an estimated year-long rehabilitation and expressed hope to return to competition by 2028. Together, these events mark a significant period of transition for Finland’s elite hurdling program.
