Lotus to revive Esprit nameplate with hybrid V6 and V8 engines

Lotus is shifting its strategic direction, moving away from an exclusively electric lineup to include hybrid models. The centerpiece of this new strategy is the Type 135 project, which is expected to revive the legendary Esprit nameplate as a hybrid supercar.

CEO Feng Qingfeng confirmed that the upcoming flagship will offer a hybrid V8 powertrain capable of producing over 1,000 horsepower. Additionally, a more accessible hybrid V6 option is being developed to help the brand comply with global emissions regulations while maintaining its focus on lightweight engineering.

The engines are being produced by Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Geely, Renault, and Aramco. The new Esprit is slated for a 2028 debut and is intended to sit between the Emira and the Evija in the Lotus lineup, aiming for a target weight of approximately 1.5 tonnes.
