Lotus hybrid supercar development
Overview
Lotus has confirmed plans to revive the iconic Esprit nameplate with a new hybrid supercar, internally codenamed Type 135, scheduled for a 2028 debut. This move marks a strategic shift from an exclusively electric roadmap, positioning the model as a bridge between the internal combustion Emira and the high-end electric Evija.
CEO Feng Qingfeng announced during an investor call that the flagship will feature a hybrid V8 powertrain capable of producing over 1,000 horsepower. To maintain the brand’s focus on lightweight engineering, Lotus aims to keep the vehicle weight below 1.5 tonnes. This will involve utilizing an 800V architecture and Formula 1-inspired electric motor technology designed to significantly reduce component mass.
In addition to the high-performance V8, Lotus is planning a more accessible V6 hybrid variant. These engines will be developed by Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Geely, Renault, and Aramco. The V6 option is expected to help the brand comply with global emissions regulations while preserving driving dynamics. Production is expected to take place at the company’s historic Hethel plant in Norfolk, UK.
Expanding its product lineup, Lotus has also opened orders in China for the Emeya 900 Gold. This high-performance version of the electric sedan delivers 905 horsepower and includes carbon fiber body elements, carbon-ceramic brakes, and active aerodynamics as standard. The Emeya 900 Gold can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.78 seconds. These moves follow significant growth in the Chinese market, which accounted for 58% of Lotus's global deliveries in the first half of 2026.
