Louis Crishock appointed acting High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina

U.S. diplomat Louis Crishock has been named acting High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Peace Implementation Council (PIC), succeeding Christian Schmidt. The appointment is temporary, pending the selection of a permanent High Representative, with the PIC aiming to reach an agreement by 14 July.

Crishock, the first American to hold the post, said the Office of the High Representative will continue its mandate to safeguard the Dayton peace agreement and the country’s constitutional order. Bosnia’s Republika Srpska disputes the legitimacy of the appointment, accusing the United Nations Security Council of not confirming it, while the Bosnian foreign minister warned that reduced U.S. engagement could open space for Russian influence. European members of the PIC are divided over alternative candidates, with Italy’s Antonio Zanardi Landi and France’s René Trokaz receiving support.

The PIC reaffirmed that the OHR’s direction will not change and emphasized the need for stability and institutional support in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
