Louisiana lobbies Washington to host U.S. Space Academy

Louisiana officials are actively lobbying in Washington to secure the location for the planned U.S. Space Academy. Proponents argue the state offers a unique aerospace corridor stretching from Lafayette to New Orleans, connecting key sites like Michoud, Stennis, and Vermilion Parish.

Michael Hecht, CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., highlighted the state's historical role in manned space flight, noting that Michoud has been a primary site for rocket construction for decades. The push for the academy follows a request for information from NASA regarding interested host states. The initiative is supported by Louisiana's congressional delegation and aims to create a pipeline of talent and infrastructure to support NASA and private companies like SpaceX, which has already committed to building a large rocket launch facility in the region.
