Louisiana rescues 74 people as floodwaters surge after Tropical Storm Arthur

Remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur dumped record rainfall on central Louisiana, with Avoyelles Parish receiving over two feet of rain in a single day. The deluge caused widespread flooding, damaging more than 300 homes and prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency for six parishes and suspend early voting in Avoyelles.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, aided by state police and local responders, rescued 74 people and six pets using trucks, boats and amphibious vehicles. Officials continued to coordinate evacuations and monitor conditions as floodwaters rose.

Amid the broader emergency, a local resident, Cody Coco, filmed himself rescuing three pigs that were swept onto his property, illustrating the personal toll of the storm on residents and livestock.
