The redrawing follows the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which declared the previous map a racial gerrerrymander and weakened the Voting Rights Act. Lawmakers say the plan meets traditional redistricting criteria and focuses on partisanship, not race. The map retains a Black‑majority district stretching from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and is expected to face legal challenges from voting‑rights advocates. About one‑third of Louisiana’s population is Black.
