Lovas marks 35th anniversary of Homeland War victims

Commemorations were held in Lovas to mark the 35th anniversary of the deaths of local residents during the Homeland War. The events included the laying of wreaths, the lighting of candles at the ‘Minsko polje’ (Minefield) memorial site, and a memorial mass at the Church of St. Michael the Archangel.

The tragedy, often referred to as the ‘bloody grape harvest,’ occurred when Croatian civilians were forced at gunpoint to walk through a minefield on October 18, 1991. Between 89 and 90 residents of Lovas lost their lives, representing more than five percent of the municipality's population at the time.

Local officials and representatives emphasized the importance of preserving the truth about these events for future generations to ensure the victims are not forgotten.
