Low-carbohydrate diets may increase LDL cholesterol in certain individuals
A study from the Stanford University School of Medicine indicates that low-carbohydrate diets may significantly increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in certain individuals. Researchers analyzed data from over 600 adults participating in a one-year dietary trial, focusing on 431 participants with available genetic data. The findings suggest that people with a genetic predisposition for high LDL cholesterol are more susceptible to increases when following low-carb diets, particularly those high in saturated fats such as red meat and cheese.
Cardiologist Jose Ablan notes that cholesterol levels can also spike due to intermittent fasting, active weight loss, or calorie deficits as the body mobilizes fat stores for energy. Additionally, chronic stress can impact lipid metabolism and hormone levels, leading to higher cholesterol. Experts emphasize that blood test results should be interpreted within a broader clinical context rather than relying on a single metric, as these fluctuations do not always indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
