Low Testosterone May Signal Higher Cancer Risk, Says Urology Expert
A large study involving about 24,500 men across 11 research projects tracked participants for at least five years. It found that men with very low testosterone levels had a higher overall risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a greater likelihood of dying from cancer. The researchers did not find a direct link between low testosterone and prostate cancer.
Urology specialist Doç. Dr. Emre Salabaş explained that low testosterone can manifest not only as reduced sexual desire or erectile problems, but also as chronic fatigue, loss of muscle strength, increased abdominal fat, sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating. These symptoms often accompany obesity, diabetes, inactivity and other chronic illnesses.
The expert stressed that diagnosing testosterone deficiency should not rely on a single test. Blood samples are best taken in the morning, and any low result should be repeated on another day. Diagnosis must consider age, body weight, medications and overall health. Persistent symptoms warrant consultation with a urology professional.
