Vietnam banks plan US$7 billion in share sales to fuel growth
Vietnamese banks are preparing for a massive capital mobilization phase, with planned share sales estimated to reach nearly US$7 billion. This surge in capital raising is driven by rapid economic growth, high credit demand, and the need to meet stricter Basel-III regulatory requirements by 2030.
Key transactions include VPBank negotiating with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to increase its stake from 15% to approximately 20%, and Vietcombank planning to sell roughly 6.5% of its shares to raise an estimated US$1.2 billion. The movement also signals a gradual opening for foreign investors in the country’s tightly controlled banking sector.
Simultaneously, the State Bank of Vietnam is shifting its strategy for debt management. The Vietnam Asset Management Company (VAMC) is being repositioned to focus on developing a robust debt trading market, including the operation of debt exchanges and supporting services like valuation and risk control, to improve the efficiency of bad debt resolution and support overall credit growth.
