SEC leaders meet without voting on LSU expulsion

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) held a virtual meeting of presidents and chancellors on Thursday without voting on whether to expel Louisiana State University (LSU). The potential expulsion followed a legal and regulatory dispute regarding LSU's attempt to roster former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin had sought to include the two players, who had previously signed professional contracts, on the Tigers' roster. However, LSU President Wade Rousse informed SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey that the university has since finalized its 105-man roster using eligible players, effectively making the legal dispute moot.

While the immediate threat of expulsion has subsided, the SEC stated that discussions regarding conference expectations and responsibilities will continue to reach an appropriate resolution. The conflict has drawn political attention, with Louisiana Senator John Kennedy criticizing the possibility of removing a founding member of the conference.

Despite the de-escalation, the SEC maintains its stance on rules regarding professional athlete eligibility, and the conference has not ruled out future sanctions or actions regarding the university's athletic department.
