Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens in Los Angeles
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a $1 billion project founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, has officially opened to the public in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park. Following a star-studded gala on September 19, the museum began regular operations on September 22, 2026.
The institution is dedicated to the art of visual storytelling, aiming to bridge the gap between high art and popular culture. Its collection features over 40,000 works, including historical paintings by artists such as Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, alongside comics, manga, illustrations, and film memorabilia. A dedicated section, ‘Star Wars in Motion,’ showcases concept designs, props, and costumes from the iconic franchise.
Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the museum’s futuristic, organic architecture spans 300,000 square feet across five stories. The campus includes more than 30 galleries, two theaters, a research library, and 13 acres of public green space and sculpture gardens. The museum seeks to treat diverse media—from prehistoric cave paintings to contemporary animation—as part of a single, unified tradition of narrative art.
