Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens in Los Angeles

Overview

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, has officially opened its doors. The $1-billion, 300,000-square-foot facility, co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, features a neo-futuristic design by architect Ma Yansong that resembles a spacecraft or cloud.

The museum houses over 40,000 works across more than 30 galleries, ranging from cave paintings and comic books to works by artists such as Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, and Vincent van Gogh. The inaugural exhibition, ‘Star Wars in Motion,’ showcases iconic vehicles, props, and costumes. Following its public opening on September 22, 2026, the museum has expanded its programming to include documentary series and explorations of creative processes.

Recently, the institution opened a dedicated fifth-floor mural gallery. This unconventional space features works by prominent artists, including street artist Banksy and Judy Baca, as well as a large reproduction of Diego Rivera’s 1933 mural originally intended for Rockefeller Center. Chief Executive Tracey Bates highlighted the inclusion of Banksy, describing him as an ‘incredible living artist of our time.’

To complement the galleries, the Skywalker Grill is operational, with Rhubarb Hospitality appointing Diego Cardoso to oversee operations. While the museum fulfills its mission to be a “temple of folk art,” it continues to navigate previous legal challenges from subcontractor J. E. Snyder Electric regarding its classification as a “public work.” The facility also includes the Robert Flaherty Theater and the Slavko Vorkapich Theater, designed for immersive film experiences.
