Lucas Museum of Narrative Art to open in Los Angeles

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is scheduled to open to the public in Los Angeles on September 22, 2026. Located in Exposition Park, the billion-dollar institution is a passion project of filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, which has been in development for approximately 17 years.

Designed by architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the museum features a futuristic, sculptural design intended to evoke emotion and movement. The facility includes 100,000 square feet of gallery space across 35 themed galleries, a public research library, a cinema, and an 11-acre parkland.

While the museum will feature significant Star Wars memorabilia—including a Naboo N-1 Starfighter and various production props—Star Wars content accounts for only about 7% of the total collection. The broader mission is to celebrate 'the people’s art,' treating populist works such as comic books, commercial illustrations, and paintings by artists like Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, and Banksy with the same reverence typically reserved for classical masters.
