Lucasfilm announces Star Wars 50th anniversary celebrations

Lucasfilm and Disney have announced a series of projects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise in 2027. A major highlight includes the theatrical re-release of the original 1977 film on February 19, 2027, which will feature a restored version available in IMAX, including limited 70mm screenings.

Other anniversary celebrations include a graphic novel titled ‘Star Wars: A New Hope: Triple Take’ by Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz, which retells the classic story from the perspectives of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. Additionally, a crossover comic titled ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’ will feature Avengers and Spider-Man characters alongside Star Wars protagonists.

For fans in Wales, a Welsh-language dub of the original film, ‘Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd’, is scheduled to arrive on S4C platforms starting Christmas Day 2026. The celebrations also extend to a traveling exhibition, ‘Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy’, which will open at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in February 2027 before embarking on a five-year North American tour.

Furthermore, the upcoming film ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, is slated for an IMAX release on May 28, 2027.
