Star Wars: Starfighter film and 50th anniversary plans

Overview

Disney and Lucasfilm have unveiled details for the upcoming film ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ at the D23 fan event. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, the film is a standalone adventure set approximately five years after ‘The Rise of Skywalker’. It focuses on a new era of the galaxy, featuring Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue whose fate is tied to a decommissioned G17 Imperial starfighter. The ensemble cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise in 2027, Lucasfilm has announced several major projects. The original 1977 film, ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’, will return to theaters on February 19, 2027, in a restored format. This marks the first time the film will be presented in IMAX, including limited 70mm screenings. ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, shot with IMAX-certified cameras, is scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027, and is expected to open in IMAX 70mm.

Additional anniversary celebrations include the crossover comic ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’, expected in late January 2027, and a graphic novel titled ‘Star Wars: A New Hope: Triple Take’ by Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz. At New York Comic Con, Lucasfilm also revealed plans for a second season of ‘Ahsoka’ and a five-issue Marvel miniseries, ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka — Escape From Thrawn’, to bridge narrative gaps. Other initiatives include a Welsh-language dub of the original film arriving on S4C on Christmas Day 2026, and a traveling exhibition, ‘Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy’, opening in Philadelphia in February 2027.
