Lucasfilm artists detail creative process for The Mandalorian and Grogu
Lucasfilm artists recently presented a panel at the LightBox Expo in Pasadena, detailing the design and production of the film “The Mandalorian and Grogu”. Concept artists Benjamin Last, Jama Jurabaev, Christian Alzmann, and Brian Matyas discussed the technical and creative challenges of translating designs into the final film.
Benjamin Last described the design of the Anzellan ship used by Grogu, noting the challenge of creating a vessel that provides comic relief while maintaining the Star Wars aesthetic. Jama Jurabaev discussed the creation of the city location Shikari, noting a mid-project transition to Unreal Engine to manage the massive scale of the environment.
Additionally, a new hardcover book titled “The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu”, written by Phil Szostak, is scheduled for release on November 3, 2026. The book will feature previously unseen concept art, sketches, and interviews regarding the film’s production.
