Lucca and Rome residential fires cause deaths and injuries

Two separate residential fires in Italy have resulted in casualties and significant property damage.

In Lucca, a devastating fire broke out in the San Vito district on the night of September 24. The blaze, which originated in a ground-floor apartment on via Corsica, claimed the lives of Gianluca Del Papa, 65, and Maria Grazia Giorgetti, 73. Investigators suggest the fire may have been caused by an accidental domestic incident involving a cigarette. The fire spread through the three-story building, forcing residents, including a newborn, to flee to balconies to await rescue. At least 13 people were injured, mostly due to smoke inhalation, with one woman in critical condition being transferred to a hospital in Pisa.

In Rome, a fire occurred in an eighth-floor apartment in the Colli Aniene neighborhood on via Efisio Orano. While emergency services successfully rescued several people, including two elderly residents, one tenant remained missing following the blaze. The building was evacuated as thick black smoke was visible from a distance. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the Rome fire and searching for the missing individual.
