Liverpool signs Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Genk

Liverpool FC has secured the signing of 18-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from KRC Genk in a deal worth up to €35 million (£30 million). The transfer makes him one of the most expensive teenage goalkeepers in history. As part of the agreement, Brughmans will remain at Genk on loan for the 2026/27 season to gain further experience.

Brughmans, who stands 1.98 meters (6ft 6in) tall, has been noted for his physical presence and technical ability, drawing comparisons to Thibaut Courtois. Genk manager Jess Thorup has expressed his intention to support the young player through the transition to the Premier League, noting that Brughmans has already demonstrated composure and earned Man of the Match honors during his recent performances.

The arrival of Brughmans has significant implications for the KRC Genk squad. Veteran goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge, 33, has confirmed he is no longer part of the club’s sporting plans and has been training individually at home for nearly three months. Van Crombrugge stated that while the club is fulfilling its contractual obligations, his role has been effectively phased out in favor of the club's focus on younger talent.
