Lucca Brughmans transfer to Liverpool

Liverpool FC has reached an agreement to sign 18-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from KRC Genk. The deal is valued at approximately £30 million to €35 million, making him one of the most expensive teenage goalkeepers in history.

As part of the arrangement, Brughmans will remain at Genk on loan for the 2026–27 season to ensure regular playing time before officially joining Liverpool ahead of the 2027–28 campaign. Standing at 6ft 6in (198cm), the young keeper has already gained senior experience and served as the captain for Belgium's U18 and U19 national teams. His physical presence and technical ability have drawn comparisons to Thibaut Courtois.

The transfer is intended as a long-term succession plan for the Merseyside club. While the deal reportedly beat competition from Real Madrid, Genk manager Jess Thorup indicated intentions to manage the player’s workload to protect him from scrutiny.

The move has also impacted Genk’s existing roster. Veteran goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge, 33, confirmed he is no longer part of the club’s sporting plans and has been training individually at home for nearly three months. Van Crombrugge stated that while the club is fulfilling its contractual obligations, his role has been effectively phased out in favor of the club's focus on younger talent.
