Lucca Prison Inmate Death Sparks Calls for Ombudsman

A 23‑year‑old Bangladeshi detainee was found dead in his cell at Lucca prison, apparently having hanged himself with a sheet. The death occurred only days after his arrest for theft and follows reports that the prison is operating at more than 200 % of its intended capacity.

Local centre‑left councilors in Lucca condemned the six‑month vacancy of the municipal Prison Ombudsman, saying the delay endangers detainee rights amid a broader crisis of overcrowding, staff shortages and inadequate facilities highlighted by the Antigone association and regional authorities.
