Lucian Pahonțu, SPP chief, linked to 1989 Securitate repression
Investigations by Recorder and Snoop have revealed that Lucian Pahonțu, the long-standing head of Romania's Protection and Guard Service (SPP), was an officer in the Securitate Troops between 1987 and 1990. Documents and testimonies suggest Pahonțu was present at the Intercontinental Hotel barricade during the violent repression of protests on December 21, 1989, and was also involved in the events of June 13, 1990, in University Square.
Pahonțu has led the SPP since 2005, serving under three presidents and 15 governments. Critics and civil society organizations have called for his resignation, noting that he failed to submit the mandatory declaration to the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) regarding his past ties.
Following these revelations, CNSAS Vice-President Mădălin Hodor announced that the institution has received new, more detailed documents from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Romanian Intelligence Service. This development is expected to unblock a verification file that has been stagnant for 18 years.
