Lufthansa Boeing 747 diverts to Manchester due to cabin smell
A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 flight traveling from Frankfurt to Toronto diverted to Manchester Airport after an unusual smell was reported in the cabin. The aircraft, carrying 371 passengers and crew, was flying over Scottish airspace when the cockpit crew declared an emergency to secure priority landing rights.
Due to the high amount of fuel remaining from the start of the transatlantic journey, the aircraft landed at a high weight. As a precaution, airport fire services inspected the plane upon arrival, though passengers were able to disembark normally via jet bridges.
Lufthansa maintenance teams identified and resolved the cause of the smell in the ventilation or air conditioning system. Passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and were transported to Toronto on a replacement aircraft the following day.
