Lufthansa Boeing 747 aviation incidents

Overview

Lufthansa Boeing 747 aircraft have been involved in two separate aviation incidents involving emergency procedures.

In late September 2026, a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 flying from Frankfurt to Toronto diverted to Manchester Airport after an unusual smell was reported in the cabin. The crew declared an emergency while over Scottish airspace. Following a high-weight landing and inspection by fire services, maintenance teams identified the issue within the ventilation or air conditioning system. Passengers were eventually transported to their destination via a replacement aircraft.

On October 10, 2026, a Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 flying from Frankfurt to Los Angeles performed an aborted landing at Los Angeles International Airport. During the initial approach on runway 24R, the main landing gear briefly touched the runway, prompting the crew to initiate a go-around maneuver. Although footage showed the aircraft’s tail coming close to the runway surface, officials confirmed that no tailstrike occurred. The aircraft landed safely on a second approach with no reported injuries.
