Lufthansa Technik begins next‑generation AeroSHARK tests on A319 short‑haul jet

Lufthansa Technik has started testing a next‑generation version of its fuel‑saving AeroSHARK surface technology on an Airbus A319 operated by Lufthansa City Airlines (registration D‑ABGK). The aircraft, dubbed “Starnberg”, flies regular short‑haul routes between Munich and Hamburg, and the trial will run until February 2027.

Around 70 transparent film patches, each 20 × 20 cm, have been applied to selected sections of the fuselage and both the inside and outside of the engine cowlings. The patches are monitored during normal flight operations and inspected on the ground in Hamburg. The test is conducted in partnership with Surventis, formerly BASF Coatings, which supplies the AeroSHARK material.

AeroSHARK uses microscopic riblet grooves modeled on shark skin to reduce aerodynamic drag. So far the technology has been used on long‑haul aircraft; the current study aims to identify material compositions that combine durability, easy application, cleaning and residue‑free removal, with a view to eventually extend the coating to wings and stabilisers. Passengers notice only a welcome panel featuring the AeroSHARK design; flight operations remain unchanged.
