Lufthansa AeroSHARK coating trial
Overview
Lufthansa Technik began field testing its next‑generation AeroSHARK surface‑coating on an Airbus A319 operated by Lufthansa City Airlines. The aircraft, registered D‑ABGK and flying the Munich‑Hamburg short‑haul route, was fitted with about 70 transparent 20 × 20 cm film patches on the fuselage and engine cowlings. The trial, running until February 2027, aims to evaluate material durability, ease of cleaning and residue‑free removal, with a view to extending the coating to wings and tail surfaces.
A follow‑up report added that the coating mimics shark‑skin riblets to cut aerodynamic drag, targeting roughly a 1 % reduction in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions per flight. Lufthansa’s long‑haul fleet already uses AeroSHARK on several Boeing 777 and a 747‑400, saving an estimated 19 tonnes of kerosene and 60 tonnes of CO₂ daily. The narrow‑body test therefore forms part of a broader effort to lower fuel consumption and meet environmental targets across the airline’s fleet.
