Lufthansa to fly final Airbus A340-600 on October 18

Lufthansa has scheduled the final commercial flights for its Airbus A340-600 fleet, marking the end of a 23-year operational period for the aircraft. The retirement is set for October 18, a week earlier than the airline’s previous plan to operate the type through October 24.

The final scheduled service, flight LH419, will depart from Washington Dulles and arrive in Frankfurt on the morning of October 19. On the same day, the aircraft will also complete its final route between New York (JFK) and Frankfurt.

The decision to retire the remaining four A340-600s was announced in April as part of the Lufthansa Group’s cost-saving and capacity measures for 2026, driven in part by rising fuel prices and the goal of simplifying the fleet. Lufthansa was a major operator of the variant, having received 24 of the 97 aircraft produced by Airbus starting in 2003. The fleet had previously been grounded during the Covid-19 pandemic, though some aircraft were later returned to service to meet demand for premium cabins.
