Romania loses 2.2 billion euros in PNRR transport funds
Interim Minister of Transport Radu Miruță has announced that the Romanian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Ciolacu, has lost 2.2 billion euros from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) specifically allocated to the transport sector.
Miruță clarified that these funds were not withheld due to a failure to implement political reforms, but rather because the European Commission identified irregularities in procurement processes and significant delays in project execution. Specific projects cited for these issues include the A7 highway (Ploiești-Buzău sector), the Cluj metro, and various sections of the A8 and Transylvania highways.
The total allocation for transport under the PNRR was 7.62 billion euros, intended to fund extensive infrastructure improvements including 250 km of highways, 1,527 km of railway modernization, and the elimination of numerous high-risk road locations.
