Argentina Economy Minister reports international optimism after G20 meetings

Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo reported high levels of optimism from international financial institutions following his participation in the G20 meetings in the United States. Caputo stated that neither the U.S. Treasury nor the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed concern regarding Argentina's economic trajectory, inflation, or rising credit delinquency.

During his meetings, Caputo held discussions with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and World Bank President Ajay Banga. Caputo described his meeting with Bessent as ‘very good’ and noted that the U.S. views Argentina's economic adjustments as a ‘leading case’ in the Western Hemisphere. Bessent praised the government's fiscal discipline and economic plan.

This international support comes amid domestic tension, as the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) has criticized the economic team's approach to the manufacturing sector. Despite these local criticisms, Caputo maintained that the country is undergoing a necessary economic reconversion and expressed confidence in meeting the targets set for the upcoming IMF program review.
