Luis de la Fuente wins Ballon d’Or Men’s Coach of the Year

Spain national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has been awarded the Johan Cruyff Trophy for Men’s Coach of the Year at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. The 65-year-old tactician received the honor following a historic year in which he led Spain to victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

De la Fuente’s award follows a period of sustained success with La Roja, including titles at the 2023 UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024. During the 2026 World Cup campaign, his side remained unbeaten and conceded only one goal throughout the tournament. His tenure has also been marked by a record-breaking 43-match unbeaten streak in international competition.

In his acceptance speech, De la Fuente emphasized that the award was a collective achievement, stating, “This prize is not individual, I understand it as a collective. A prize of many players who are here.” He beat out a shortlist of prominent managers, including Mikel Arteta, Luis Enrique, Unai Emery, and Vincent Kompany.

In other honors at the ceremony, Pere Romeu was named Women’s Coach of the Year for his work with FC Barcelona, and Unai Simón was recognized as the world’s best goalkeeper.
